INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVE DIRECTORY

The American Studies Association is delighted that the program directors, journal editors, and associations presidents of so many American studies programs, journals and associations based outside the U.S. responded positively to our invitation to join us in Atlanta!

We extend a special welcome to them, and hope that they will find the conference to be stimulating and productive.

This directory is designed to give everyone attending the conference a brief overview of some of the international programs, journals and associations represented at this meeting, as well as contact information to help you keep the conversation going after the conference ends.

All programs, journals and associations based outside the U.S. sending representatives to Atlanta were invited to submit entries to the directory. Although all that were received are included, the directory is far from complete.

In addition to the official representatives of programs, journals and associations listed in this directory, many other scholars from around the world are participating in this conference, delivering papers and participating in roundtables, workshops, and meetings. We are pleased that more than 120 scholars from over 30 countries and five continents plan to attend.

The ASA would like to thank the Mellon Foundation, the Asia Foundation, the U.S.-China Education Trust, and the Fisher Foundation for their generous support.

Comparative American Studies
A new international journal that extends scholarly debates about American Studies beyond the geographical boundaries of the United States, repositioning discussions about American culture within an international, comparative framework. At a time of increasing globalization, there is a growing need for American Studies to be re-articulated in a comparative manner: that is to say, first and foremost by taking account of interaction between the USA and other parts of the world, whilst also attending fully to multi-ethnic comparisons within the USA and other countries of the Americas. The main disciplines covered in the journal are: literature, film, popular culture, photography, and the visual arts.

Safundi The Journal of South African and American Comparative Studies
Safundi-“S” represents “South Africa,” “a” stands for America, and “fundi” comes from the Xhosa word, “umfundi,” which translates as “scholar.” Safundi is an online community of scholars, professionals, and others interested in comparing and contrasting the United States of America with the Republic of South Africa. Our journal, Safundi: The Journal of South African and American Comparative Studies, is the centerpiece of our online community. We believe that analyzing the two countries in a comparative context enhances our perspective on each, individually. While new comparative research is the perspective on each, we also publish articles specifically addressing one country, provided the articles are of interest to the comparative scholar. Furthermore, our subject matter is as permeable as any country’s border: we will consider research addressing other colonial and postcolonial states in Southern Africa and North America.

Symbiosis: A Journal of Anglo-American Literary Relations
Symbiosis is a peer-reviewed journal indexed by the MLA. It bridges the institutional divide between literatures in English on either side of the Atlantic, a divide recognized by few creative writers. Playing a leading part in the modern revival of transatlantic perspectives, Symbiosis is the only journal uniquely concerned with studies of literary and cultural relations between the British Isles and the Americas. It publishes articles concerned with all periods of transatlantic relations, since the beginnings of Anglophone American, and representing all theoretical perspectives.
